A glimmer of hope amidst chaos: The Elpidio Quirino story
Elpidio Quirino was born November 16, 1890, rising from humble beginnings, being born in Vigan, Ilocos Sur. Quirino wasted no time honing his skills, studying at Vigan national high school, then later on, in the University of the Philippines completing his studies in 1915 and passing the bar the same year.
After which, he made a name for himself, becoming senator in 1919, then rising through the ranks to cabinet secretary, and eventually vice president to Manuel Roxas. He then assumed the presidency upon Roxas' death in 1948.
Quirino's presidency was focused on rebuilding a post-WW2 Philippines, rebuilding infrastructure, modernizing the economy, implementing land reform, improving public health, and expanding access to education. He also strengthened ties to the west, most notably to the United States, which helped place the Philippines on the map in a post world war 2 world. This helped us join many organizations such as the United Nations and the Southeast Asia Treaty Organization. His legacy, despite being marred by accusations of corruption during his tenure as president, he is still remembered as a reformer and a public servant to the Philippines when it needed it the most. He is a symbol of Filipino resiliency and our profound ability to rise up once more no matter what calamity we face.
